Posted on 30 January 2015

Congratulations to Rebekah Lee who has won the Juan Facundo RiaƱo Essay Medal!

The competition is run by ARTES (Iberian & Latin American Visual Culture Group) in collaboration with the Embassy of Spain, and the medal is awarded to the author of the best art-historical essay on a Hispanic theme.

Rebekah adapted the introduction and first chapter of her MA thesis which examined Catherine of Austria, a Spanish Hapsburg princess and Queen of Portugal, focussing on the development of her self image and her portrait by Anthonis Mor, examining how she used her middle aged body as a political tool. The title of the essay was 'Catherine of Austria, Queen of Portugal and the Courtly Portrayal of Middle Age.'

The prize will be awarded at a special awards ceremony at the Spanish Embassy in London.

Rebekah completed her undergraduate degree and MA at York, her MA being supervised by Cordula Van Wyhe.  She is currently working towards her PhD, again supervised by Cordula Van Wyhe.
