New Tate 'In Focus' Publication by Sarah Turner

Posted on 31 July 2013

As part of the exciting new feature of Tate's online resources, 'In Focus', Sarah Turner has published a fascinating study on 'Wrestlers' by Henri Gaudier-Brzeska.

The cast of 'Wrestlers' was given to Tate by the curator Jim Ede from a series of 9 that he had made in an effort to bring the work of Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, a gifted and radical sculptor whose life was tragically brief, to wider public attention.

In this project, Sarah Turner examines the circumstances surrounding the making of the casts, and explores Gaudier-Brzeska's fascination with wrestling and the depiction of the human body.  She also touches upon his friendship with Ezra Pound as she looks into the portrayal of sport and physicality in the modern art and poetry of the time.  The project includes a commentary and poems by the poet and wrestler S.J. Fowler. See the full piece here.
