The conference has been jointly organised with the Centre for the History of Hermetic Philosophy and related currents, University of Amsterdam, and is funded by the Leverhulme Trust and a number of other sponsors. The event will feature 55 papers presented by speakers from all over the world (including Japan, India, Mexico, Australia, Canada, USA and Israel) and tickets have sold out with 130 attendees confirmed.

The conference will explore what the arts can tell us about the complex relationships between theosophy, modernity and artistic culture in the period from 1875 to 1960. The connections between theosophy and modernist aesthetics have been well documented in relation to artists such as Kandinsky and Mondrian. However, the purpose of this conference is to develop a more nuanced and complex picture of the multiple layering of art, modernity and mysticism in a range of artistic practices in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
