Alexandra Jung

  • Studied: MA in Stained Glass Conservation and Heritage Management (2011, Wentworth Graduate College)
  • Current Position: Stained Glass Conservator, and Head of the Conservation Department, Derix Glasstudios

What have you been doing since you graduated?

"After successful completion of the MA I decided to return to Derix Glasstudios (Taunusstein, Germany) where I had worked as a glazier and glass painter – mainly in the field of conservation – prior to my studies in York. This previous experience prompted them to approach me in search of an academically trained stained glass conservator for the establishment and management of a department solely concerned with the conservation of historic stained glass windows. As head of the department I am responsible for the supervision and processing of conservation projects, as well as for customer acquisition and advice. Hence my work comprises hands-on technical work on site and in the workshop, but also desk work, and of course communication with clients, architects, heritage bodies and parish councils. It is this diversity and the always varying projects, each with their own requirements, which I like most about this job."

What transferable skills do you feel you gained from your degree?

"Thanks to the broad range of modules, as well as tutors and fellow students from different backgrounds, I gained a profound theoretical basis in all aspects regarding my profession as a stained glass conservator. The course also widened my horizons enormously, by learning not only about the theory and practice of conservation and heritage management in the UK and EU, but also in other countries and cultures in the world.

The ability to always consider and assess various options from different perspectives, and to state reasons for decisions taken in a comprehensible manner, are certainly the most important skills I developed during the course."

What advice would you give to current students?

"No matter what prospects your subject of choice offers, study what you are interested in and what you enjoy. Your personal and professional outcome of your studies depends largely on your own interests and attitude. It is more importantly flexibility, patience and persistence that will help you find your career path in the end.

The university is also a good place to meet students and tutors from very different backgrounds and countries in the world. This is a great chance to learn about new perspectives and to reflect on your own approaches and opinions you may have never questioned before."
