Innovate York programme drives business growth across the city
A transformative business support programme led by the University of York has officially concluded, leaving a lasting legacy on the city’s entrepreneurial landscape.

Innovate York, funded through the City of York Council by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, has helped more than 100 local businesses and pre-startups grow, innovate, and build resilience in a fast-changing economy.
Launched to strengthen York’s economy through tailored business support, Innovate York has provided workshops, mentoring, and a women’s peer to peer network to help entrepreneurs enhance their skills and bring new ideas to market.
One such entrepreneur is Camilla Grayley of Camilla Grayley Garden Design, who credited the programme with helping her shape the future of her business:
“The training and mentoring came at just the right time to help gain clarity on where I want to take my business in 2025. Reviewing current services and coming up with ideas for new services. I now have a good understanding of the research I'm going to undertake and where to start marketing my new offerings.”
Throughout its delivery, Innovate York supported 125 businesses, including 4 start-ups that launched as a direct result of the programme. A total of 17 new products and services were developed, contributing to the city’s growing reputation as a hub of innovation. The initiative also generated 11.82 new jobs,, delivering a measurable boost to the local economy.
Supporting Women in Innovation
A key focus of the programme was on empowering women in business through targeted support and community-building. One participant, Cher Casey of The Mindful Organiser, said the experience had been transformational:
“This programme was instrumental in building my confidence, problem-solving skills, and resilience. Being surrounded by fellow female entrepreneurs allowed me to learn, share, and grow in a safe and inspiring environment. I made wonderful contacts and learned a lot about business and myself.”
Lasting Impact
While the programme has now come to an end, its influence is expected to continue shaping York’s business community for years to come. By boosting innovation, encouraging new product development, and supporting emerging enterprises, Innovate York has laid the groundwork for long-term economic growth and greater competitiveness across the region.
