The York Law School's small business legal clinic
Posted on Friday 7 October 2022

The University of York Law School Small Business Legal Clinic is staffed voluntarily by Masters students, with support from supervising solicitors at the university and law firm Ward Hadaway.
The Clinic is aimed at supporting new start-ups, social enterprises and fledgling micro businesses. These businesses often start out in the most deprived areas, taking advantage of financial incentives offered by local authorities to help generate new jobs and opportunities.
The advice offered through the clinic is aimed at entrepreneurs facing many of the common legal issues experienced by start-up and fledgling organisations such as managing data protection compliance, protecting their intellectual property or establishing corporate structures. In the past, questions have focused on NDAs, GDPR policies, company formation and what it means to be a social enterprise.
The Clinic offers clients a free interview and initial letter of advice. The interview, research and drafting of the advice letter is done by students closely supervised and supported by the Supervising Solicitor who will have ultimate responsibility for signing off on the advice.
