The heart of Dante’s Comedy is its language, and only by approaching the poem linguistically, on its own terms, may a reader come to a fuller appreciation of the poet’s monumental achievement. This book seeks to detain its reader within the Italian vernacular, spending as long as possible on the line, even in a state of puzzlement, dwelling within the poem’s words.
