Biography

Beth is Professor of Evidence Synthesis and Head of Department of the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination.

The primary focus of her research is evidence synthesis where she has led 25 systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and network meta-analyses in both the Bayesian and frequentist frameworks, covering therapeutic areas as diverse as immunotherapeutics, sickle cell disease, deprescribing in older adults, and health information exchange. She is currently assessing study-level risk of bias and estimating quantitative bias adjustment parameters for inclusion in network meta-analyses. She co-founded and is a member of the leadership team of the LATITUDES Network (latitudes-network.org), a web-based library of validity tools to assess bias in studies included in evidence synthesis projects.

She is Professor Emeritus at the Comparative Health Outcomes, Policy, and Economics (CHOICE) Institute, School of Pharmacy, University of Washington (UW), Seattle, WA, USA. From 2014-2025, she was the UW-site principal investigator for the Pacific Northwest Evidence-Based Practice Center (PNW EPC), based at Oregon Health & Science University. The PNW EPC is one of 13 academic centers that conduct evidence synthesis projects for the US federal government and professional societies. From 2009-2011, she was a member of the ISPOR Indirect Treatment Comparison Task Force and is currently co-leading the ISPOR Task Force that is updating of this work. In 2013, she was elected as a member of the Society for Research Synthesis Methodology.

Trained in all aspects of Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR) Beth’s other research interests include comparative- and cost-effectiveness analyses using real-world evidence (RWE), outcomes research and preference assessment, health technology assessment (HTA), and precision medicine in the context of clinical informatics. In addition to AHRQ, her work has been funded by the NIH National Human Genome Research Institute, National Cancer Institute, National Institute on Aging, and by the Life Sciences Industry.

Beth has mentored countless graduate students and Doctor of Pharmacy students. She taught graduate level courses in Outcomes Research Methods and in Meta-Analysis; and the Biostatistics and Study Design course for the Doctor of Pharmacy students, all on the UW Health Sciences campus. She is currently coursemaster of the Principals of Data Science & Healthcare Data course as part the Certificate in Data Science Methods for RWE in Health and co-coursemaster of the Global HTA and Market Access course in the Certificate in Health Economics, HTA and Market Access, both certificates offered through the UW Distance Learning Program.

For many years, Beth has been a leader in ISPOR – the Professional Society for Health Economics and Outcomes Research, serving as President (2026-2027), president-elect (2025-2026) and as a member of the Board of Directors (2021-2024). She is an Associate Editor for ISPOR’s flagship journal Value in Health. From 2024-2026 she has been a Visiting Professor, Population Health Sciences, University of Bristol, UK. In 2021, she was a Fulbright US Scholar at the Department of Public Health and Health Services, University of Murcia, Murcia, Spain, and an Honorary Professor there from 2022-2024.

Beth is the author of over 175 peer-reviewed publications, numerous governmental reports, and was the lead co-editor of the textbook titled, ¨Clinical Decision Support for Pharmacogenomic Precision Medicine¨ (2022). She received her PhD from the Department of Health Services, UW, PharmD from the University of the Pacific, MBA from the University of San Francisco, and MSc in Medical Statistics & Health Data Science from the University of Bristol. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in HEOR with UW and Roche Global Pharma Business. Prior to turning her focus to research, she practiced as prescribing clinical pharmacist in inpatient settings, ending that career as an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of California San Francisco.
