Celebrating 50 Years of Chemistry at York

The Opening of our New Undergraduate Teaching Laboratory & Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence

Chemistry at York has been an amazing success story. We look forward to welcoming back staff, researchers, students and their families to help us celebrate our 50th anniversary - and to join us in opening our newest building (as well as meeting old friends and rekindling old memories)

Professor Richard Taylor, former Head of Department

Since our birth in 1964, the Department of Chemistry has grown and developed into an internationally leading department for both teaching and research.

To celebrate the success of the Department, on our golden anniversary, we will be inviting our Chemistry alumni to join us for the opening of our latest new building over the weekend of 5-7 September 2014.

This two-storey building, part of a £29 million investment in the department, is based on the site of the old Chemistry Block C and houses our extensive undergraduate teaching laboratories and Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence

The opening event will include tours of the Department of Chemistry, presentations, together with a buffet reception.

We look forward to seeing lots of familiar faces to help us celebrate our first 50 years.

We need your support as we continue to develop excellence in our teaching and research. You can find out more about our Chemistry 50 Fund or download further information and a donation form - now is a great time to give as Chemistry alumnus Dr Anthony Wild is matching gifts £ for £.

The Department has certainly changed over the past 50 years as illustrated by some facts about our first few years:
