CAHR MA? The MA is unique in foregrounding human rights practice, social science methodologies and an activist pedagogy in its teaching. Innovative features of the programme include:

  • Human rights defenders on our Protective Fellowship Scheme take part in classes.
  • Placements are provided in South Africa or York (which is a Human Rights City) to enable students to learn by doing concrete projects.
  • Other opportunities for project-based learning are offered, including through a UNESCO Chair which focuses on universities as sites of activism and protection.
  • Modules like the Practice of Fieldwork prepare students for future careers.

Students leave the programme with a combination of classroom-based and project-based learning, which is ideally suited to securing jobs in NGOs, community groups, governments, and inter-governmental agencies. Students are taught by an international cohort of staff who work across disciplines, as academics and activists, and locally as well as internationally.
