What does it mean to walk beside those who risk everything for human rights? When human rights defenders face threats and persecution, first responders often play a crucial role in shaping not only their immediate safety, but the way they rebuild their life. In this talk, Farah Abou El Sel explores how meaningful accompaniment can transform the way human rights defenders experience protection and resilience.
Through the lens of real-life experiences and stories from her work across the MENA region, the talk highlights the impact of a protection dynamic that prioritizes empathy and solidarity over rescue. It also engages with the ethical and psychological dimensions of mentorship, unpacking the subtle patterns that can arise within the support relationship.
Using reflections and theories, Farah invites the audience to explore the power of mentorship and how first responders and practitioners can leave a lasting imprint on the lives of those who continue to defend human rights under immense pressure.
