From South Africa to York and Back: Sharing principles, Ideas and experiences about an inclusive approach to transport
Marriott Room, York Explore Library, Library Square, Museum Street (Map)
Event details
Amanda Gibberd is a civil servant in the Department of Transport, South Africa with responsibility for monitoring the policy implementation of universally accessible transport in cities and evaluating its impact. She is also a [mature] PhD student at the prestigious Person-Environment-Activity Research Laboratory (PEARL) at University College London, whose commitment is to making our built environment a better place. Amanda will be speaking in a personal capacity.
Amanda writes: ‘The South African Constitution requires equality regardless of social markers of difference, including disability. Understanding how to create a world where everyone daily experiences equality is no easy task. I have become particularly interested in transport planning and decision-making in government and the question: ‘How can governments 'unlearn' discriminatory processes and decision-making to achieve new accessible, inclusive, liveable and sustainable cities?’
Helen Jones and Ashley Fisher are from York Disability Rights Forum. They will introduce key aspects of YDRF’s approach to transport in the city and its vision for York to be a city that is truly accessible for disabled people and in which ‘disability rights are human rights’.
Access: The building has step-free access, wheelchair-accessible toilets and 3 Blue Badge spaces immediately outside the building (see information regarding accessible parking). The Marriott Room has a hearing loop. Read more about access in the building. BSL interpretation will be available for those attending in person.
