Event details

On February 22, 2019, Algeria witnessed unprecedented peaceful popular demonstrations across the country. Millions of Algerians took to the streets to say “no” to a fifth term for President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who has been in power since 1999, and to demand profound change in the political system. The movement, initially a beacon of hope for change, quickly ran into a political deadlock and unprecedented repression, targeting in particular actors from civil society.

In this talk, an Algerian journalist will analyse the developments that led to deterioration in the human rights situation, particularly regarding freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly.
