People

The Centre of Blood Research at York brings together a diverse community of researchers, clinicians and students.

Together, we are working to understand blood cancers and disorders, to have a real-world impact on patients and their families.

Directorate The Directorate lead on Centre development to ensure we meet our aims of delivering transformative research.

CBR Director

Professor Adele Fielding - My research focuses on acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL); I evaluate novel therapies through designing and running large academic national clinical trials as well as working with pharma on new approaches. I also work on the basic science of ALL in the laboratory, with a focus on the bone marrow microenvironment. My clinical practice is at Hull University Teaching Hospitals.

 Group leaders

Dr Jillian Barlow - My research projects will be a mix of cellular (cell culture, flow cytometry, microscopy) and molecular (qPCR, RNA-seq) assays with some projects focusing on mining “big data” for novel molecular targets for driving cell fate choice.
Dr Dave Boucher - My research focuses on understanding how the human innate immune system recognizes and responds to bacterial infection, specifically how a protein signalling complex called the inflammasome is doing so in the human body.
Dr Katherine Bridge - My research focuses on cancer cell biology, particularly identifying and targeting aberrant transcription control; biotechnology development and innovation for new cancer therapies.
Dr William Grey - My research focuses on the role of proteostasis (equilibrium of proteins in the body) in healthy and malignant stem cell development.  The main focus of the lab is the blood system and cancerous transformation to acute myeloid leukaemia (AML).
Dr James Hewitson - My research focuses on how blood stem cells respond to type 2 inflammation.  This occurs in parasitic worm infections and allergy that collectively affect billions of people worldwide.
Professor Ian Hitchcock - My research is focused on understanding the mechanisms of oncogenic driver mutations in myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) development. MPNs are a group of blood cancers characterised by the overproduction of red blood cells and/or platelets, and is the most common myeloid cancer.

David Kent Professor David Kent - My research focuses on understanding the molecular regulators of normal blood stem cells and the clonal evolution of cancers from single cells.  This work is contributing to our knowledge of how blood cancers such as leukaemia progress.
Professor Eve Roman - My research focuses on cancer epidemiology, particularly haematological malignancy and childhood cancer.  The determinants of child health and adverse reproductive events.  Epidemiological study design; and the effective use of routinely collected health data for epidemiological research.
Professor Alex Smith - My research is focused on cancer epidemiology, haematological malignancies and analysis of observational/real-world data.
