Fires and Fascism: film screening and panel discussion
Campus West (venue TBC)
Event details
FIRES AND FASCISM is a new 57-min documentary shows the wildfires in Europe are more than just climate change and mismanagement. It links the growing wildfires of Europe with past fascism, big business, organised crime, and the far right. It showcases how communities are engaging in direct action, protest, rewilding, and suppressing the uncontrollable fires and the far right.
The experiences and actions of 25 people across Greece, Italy, Spain, and Portugal feature, ranging between scientists, teachers, artists, gardeners, engineers, winemakers, NGOs, and authors.
A panel discussion will follow, featuring insights from:
Dr Pete Knapp, the filmmaker, who has a background in air quality and shifted careers from academia to storytelling. The film aims to start the conversation on what we do about the rise of fascist attitudes.
Dr Catherine Love-Smith, lecturer in the School of Arts and Creative Technologies, arts journalist and theatre critic, and expert advisor to the Sustainability Clinic.
Dr Eric Hoddy, social scientist in the Centre for Applied Human rights with research interests in climate and development, human rights and social movements.
Dr Pete Gardner, political sociologist whose research focuses on the sociology of climate and ecological breakdown and the criminalisation and political repression of climate activists.
