Once you have done your research and decided which exchange placement you are interested in, discuss your plans with your Supervisor and Departmental Erasmus Coordinator. If you are doing a joint degree, you must discuss the exchange plan with both departments.
In the Spring Term, get the exchange institution's Erasmus application form and accommodation application form (if applicable) from your Departmental Coordinator and submit them in good time. The deadlines are usually the end of May or the end of June for an exchange which begins in the Autumn but check this with your Coordinator as every institution has its own deadlines.
For a complete guide to what you need to do and when you need to do it, take a look at the Erasmus calendar.
If you are interested in applying, first let your supervisor know; they will need to ensure that courses are available which are acceptable as a programme of studies contributing to your degree. Some Departments have appointed "International advisers" who will also be able to help with applications to worldwide institutions.
Applications for Worldwide Exchange, the International Study Centre and Summer Schools can now be made via your e:vision homepage. Simply click on the "Global York International Application Form" link and follow the instructions. You should ensure that you have discussed the schemes with your Supervisor so that they can write an informed reference on your behalf (the Study Abroad team will request references directly).
Your application; should comprise
1. an uploaded curriculum vitae of not more than one side of A4, giving personal details, educational and employment history and examination results.
2. an uploaded essay of not more than 500 words stating how you hope to benefit from your exchange year; giving a clear account of reasons for your selection of institution, relevant interests (academic and personal), motivation for studying abroad and future career aspirations.
3.a provisional list of modules for your preferred exchange institution. This should be drawn up in consultation with your Supervisor. If you wish to apply to the University of California you will need to submit a provisional list of modules for each of your three campus preferences.
The deadline for applications (excluding Erasmus) is Monday 7th January 2013. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
Applying for multiple schemes
You may apply for only one exchange scheme, however, as part of your application you may state whether you would be prepared to accept a place on another of the schemes if you were offered one.
Application results
Applicants will be informed whether or not they are being invited for an interview with the Worldwide Exchange Selection Panel by 16 January 2012 (date for 2013 to be confirmed) for applicants for the California scheme.
