Overview

About the programme

This sociology degree is designed for students with a particular interest in criminology. It draws upon a broad range of sociological, social psychological and cultural forms of analysis in order to better understand contemporary forms of crime and deviance.

The degree will appeal to students with an interest in ethnographic and cultural accounts of crime who are also keen to understand the broader global socio-economic contexts of contemporary criminality and its regulation and control.

Classroom contact time

The classroom contact time for this course is 12 hours per week in the first year, this intensive format helps you to build up your knowledge, skills and confidence when you first arrive with us. A typical week for a first year student includes eight hours of lectures and four hours of small group teaching, you will have readings and tasks to prepare for your classes which you will access through the virtual learning environment. The contact time and the assessments are designed to help make the transition to degree level study so that you can succeed in the second and first year. We then reduce the contact time in the second and third year as more emphasis is placed upon the student. The classroom contact hours in the second year are 9 hours per week and in the third year you have 6 hours per week plus one-to-one supervision on your dissertation project with an expert in your chosen topic.

Employment after your degree

Students graduating with a BA (Hons) Sociology with Criminology degree will be encouraged to apply for the range of posts including management, administration, human resources, housing, media, retail, public policy, education, and the social services.

The degree is also likely to open up the possibility of finding a job in policing, probation and crime control.
