Overview

Since it was established fifty years ago the Department of Sociology at the University of York has been at the leading edge of international developments in sociology.

It is known for its creative approach towards the discipline generally and especially for its world-leading work in the areas of culture, crime, health, interaction, gender and sexuality, science, technology, and media. This informs and enriches our range of postgraduate Masters degree programmes. The department has a vibrant international research culture which translates directly into our postgraduate degrees and our postgraduate courses offer students from around the world the opportunity to work closely with faculty who are researching and writing on the topics that matter most in the world today. Our courses are designed to be lively and imaginative whilst also providing you with skills that will be of use to you when you graduate.

Our postgraduate students are fully integrated into department life, including our thriving postgraduate community of students from around the world. We have a variety of research seminars and lectures given by leading sociologists that students are encouraged to attend. Thus our postgraduate students have the opportunity to become a central part of the exciting developments in the Sociology Department, a world-leading university, and in the wider academic world.

We welcome applications from interested and enthusiastic students and we consider each on their individual merits. You will find a list of our courses below.
