Posted on 29 January 2024

The Postgraduate Research community from the Department of Sociology at the University of York is delighted to invite you all to our annual PGR Conference which will be held on Thursday 13 June 2024.

Text reads: Bodies in the Making. Bodies in the Making: Identity, Culture and Society. Department of Sociology PR conference 13th June 2024

This year’s theme will be ‘Bodies in the Making: Identity, Culture and Society’ and our keynote address will be delivered by Professor Colin Barnes, Emeritus Professor of Sociology and Disability Studies from the School of Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Leeds.

The conference welcomes proposals from postgraduate researchers working in any discipline who wish to engage in discussion in the field of the body and its relationship to questions of identity, cultural practices and wider social discourses of inclusivity and social justice. The topic has been left broad to allow flexibility for participation.

Successful applicants will be asked to present their proposed abstract for 10 minutes as part of a panel discussion alongside three to four other scholars. Each panel will field questions jointly for a further 20 minutes at the conclusion of their session. Lunch and refreshments will be provided for all speakers and attendees.

Please submit an abstract (250 words max) alongside a short bio (150 words max) by completing the Google form by Monday 15 April 2024. The list of presenters will be announced by Monday 13 May 2024. A small amount of funding may be available to cover the travel costs of speakers who would otherwise be unable to attend. Please indicate whether you require support with your submission or if you would like to have the opportunity to present via Zoom.

Our commitment is to create an inclusive and accessible conference experience, offering both in-person and virtual attendance options. We are here to ensure everyone has the opportunity to fully participate, so please let us know if any particular accommodations are needed to facilitate your attendance and active participation.

In addition to the conference panels, there will be a poster competition during the lunch break. There will be a small prize awarded to the best poster, as voted for by participants on the day. We encourage you to submit a conference poster related to 'Bodies in the Making: Identity, Culture and Society' using this Google form.

For general attendance, you can reserve your place at the conference now. Panellists do not need to book tickets.
