Week 8: Learning Community Newsletter

Posted on 15 April 2024

All the latest from the department

Welcome back to another week of Politics at York! Quite literally this time as the nominations are now open for Student Representatives. These are really great opportunities to get involved in the department and have a say in how we teach. If you are interested but want to know more before being nominated you can drop me an email or contact the current reps to get more information. Nominations close on the 3rd May.

The Politics Coffee Morning is also on at 09:30-11:00 on Wednesday in the Politics Reception area. It's been great to catch-up with everyone since the break and I look forward to seeing more of you there this week.

Other than that, I hope everyone has a good week!

South Africa vs Israel in the International Court of Justice & the Global Legal Battle to Prevent Genocide.

Thursday 18th April

6.15pm-7.45pm, LMB/002A (book tickets)

Israel’s decades long occupation of Palestine has culminated in South Africa taking the historic step of triggering the Genocide Convention to try to force Israel to stop it, actions which it alleges amount to Genocide. Since 7th October, in its ambition to destroy Hamas, Israel has relentlessly engaged in military action against Palestinians in Gaza which has resulted in over 30,000 Palestinians killed, the destruction of the health infrastructure, starvation and over 1.5 million people being displaced. Despite widespread allegations of war crimes alleged against Israel, the UN Security Council has failed to order an unconditional ceasefire and the International Criminal Court has yet to issue a single arrest warrant for any Israeli military or political personnel. We will cover the significance of South Africa’s case against Israel in the ICJ and, where States and legal-political institutions fail, the legal efforts being taken to try to prevent Genocide and hold politicians across the globe accountable for their alleged complicity in war crimes.

This is a Hybrid Public Lecture (followed by Q and A) with Tayab Ali, Director of the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians and Head of International Law at Bindmans LLP.
