Originally, York was not at the top of my list of prospective universities. However, that changed when I attended a university open day. I had visited several other universities but found their campuses bland and boring but there was something different about York. Having the campus centred around a lake creates an attractive working environment. The friendly atmosphere let me know I would settle in easily. The Department of Physics was particularly impressive and I couldn't wait to get involved.

I am now in the final year of my four year MPhys course in Physics with Astrophysics. I have learnt a great deal in my time here but part of what makes Physics so exciting is that I still have a lot to learn. From an early age I have been amazed by the wonders of the Universe and the Astrophysics course at York has allowed me to explore and understand them. York has exceptional facilities including optical and radio telescopes which I have had the privilege of using. The optical telescope was used to calculate the mass of Jupiter using the orbits of its moons and the radio telescope to map the rotation of the Milky Way, a task I found particularly fascinating. All of this was possible because I came to York. Students at York benefit from frequent, informal contact with academic staff. Support and advice is always available and tutors are friendly and willing to help with problems or just chat about physics! The time I have spent at York will be a time I can look back on fondly.
