Our degree programmes are offered as a three year BSc or a four year MPhys, which has proven extremely popular with both students and employers. The extra year in the MPhys programmes provides the opportunity to include additional physics material, provide further training in communication skills and for you to undertake a major research project extending over 3 terms. This project is the culmination of the degree programme and draws together the many skills acquired.
It should be stressed that both BSc and MPhys degrees make comparable intellectual demands, and good performance in either should give you access to a career in scientific research, although in more competitive areas the MPhys may well be preferred.
Thus, if you want to make a career as a professional physicist then you should seriously consider one of the MPhys degrees; otherwise a BSc degree may be more appropriate.
Transfers between BSc and MPhys courses are normally possible at the end of the first and second year, subject to satisfactory performance.
