Public engagement

The Department of Physics recognises the value of communicating our science to the wider public and in encouraging the next generation of young scientists. Public engagement is therefore an important part of our work and an area in which we have shown a strong commitment. At present, one of our academic staff, Dr David Jenkins has a Science-in-Society Fellowship from the STFC funding council.

Over the last couple of years, we have run outreach events which have interacted with a few thousand schoolchildren and several thousand members of the public.

These events include:

  • Hands-on workshops and residential events for the 11-16 age group. Many of these events are organised by the University of York Excellence Hub
  • World of Physics - a two-day event for 300 local schoolchildren supported by the four Yorkshire Universities
  • Lectures and talks at various schools locally and across the UK
  • Tours of our facilities such as the state-of-the-art nanocentre and university observatory
  • Physics in the Field events
  • Closely involved in producing "Physics Review" a journal for 6th formers studying Physics

We also have an active programme of evening lectures organised through the Institute of Physics Yorkshire Branch and we regularly provide speakers for the well-attended programme in York run by the Yorkshire Philosophical Society.
