Vinson Assistantships

The Music Department offers a number of assistantships to postgraduates by which qualified individuals acquire experience appropriate to their career paths through practical work within the Department. These of varying value and of varying number. The Assistantships are normally of one year’s duration.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible to apply for any of the Music Department awards, you must first have been offered a place on one of our courses. All assistantships are open to postgraduate music students for any residency, unless otherwise specified. Recipients are normally expected to be resident in York for the duration of their award.

Applications

Application is by letter, with accompanying CV: describe fully and clearly your qualifications for the assistantship for which you are applying, and highlight relevant experience in your CV. You may apply for more than one assistantship, but be sure to describe your qualifications for each of the positions. Your application should be submitted to Catherine Duncan by post or by email as Word documents attachments.

For full consideration, materials should arrive by 11 June 2012. Some posts may not be filled immediately; you may enquire about unfilled positions after 31 July 2012.

Note: Renewal of these awards is not automatic. Returning students must reapply each year.

Vinson Assistantship for Internet Services (£2,400)

This post entails developing and maintaining the department websites and assisting in running web-related systems. The assistant will have considerable scope in proposing changes to the sites and in applying and enhancing personal skills in web design and related areas. Applicants must be proficient in coding HTML. Familiarity with PHP, MySQL, Photoshop and similar programmes will be a distinct advantage. This post requires about 10 hours work per week and is valued at £2,400.

Vinson Sound Archives Assistantship (£TBC)

This post entails assisting with the University of York Sound Archives. This assistant must be organized and self-motivated, with database experience (preferably Microsoft Access) and a good attention to detail. Audio technology experience would be a useful advantage. MPhil/PhD candidates will be given preference. Duties include handling and cataloguing fragile archival items, and working with the Department CD and tape collections. This post requires about 9 hours work per week and is valued at £2,000

Vinson Concert Recording Assistantship (£700)

This assistant records concerts and recitals, manages the duplication and storage of these recordings, and provides technical recording assistance to undergraduate and postgraduate students. Proven experience in recording and/or production is required (both for audio and audiovisual recordings). The successful applicant will also be exceptionally reliable and responsible and will possess a demonstrated capacity for independent problem-solving. Much of the work will be done in the evenings, and the post-holder must have the flexibility to respond to changes of schedule on short notice. This post requires about 3 hours work per week during term (may be irregular) and is valued at £700.

Department Technical Assistantship (£2,000)

Duties will include issuing equipment, preparing rooms for teaching, maintaining an equipment inventory, as well as assisting with visiting lectures, lunchtime concerts and other events. Out of term, this assistant may occasionally be needed to help with the repairing and upgrading of equipment and providing assistance as directed by the Department Technician. The post offers opportunity for acquiring and honing professional skills and for developing new technology initiatives for the Department. Applicants should have prior experience with electronic technology, especially audiovisual, and should be capable of efficiently identifying and solving problems (when possible) with such equipment. Expertise in data-projection and related software (SmartBoard, PowerPoint) and DVD authoring is highly desirable. MPhil/PhD students will be given preference. This post requires about 10-12 hours work per week during term and is valued at £2,000.

Young Musicians Accompanying Assistantship (£1,440)

An experienced pianist will be appointed to this post. Duties include accompanying undergraduate recitalists and Department ensembles, as well as managing teams of players on audition days. Excellent sight-reading is a requirement; score-reading and transposition at sight are desirable. Work averages 6 hours per week but is very concentrated at certain times of the year, and the post-holder must be prepared to adjust his/her schedule to accommodate needs as they arise. The value of this award is £1,440.

Young Musicians Choral Assistantship (£700)

This assistant supports the departmental choral ensembles through various administrative tasks. Duties include: managing the library and all associated materials; scheduling and managing auditions, and joining with the conductors in assessing undergraduate auditionees; managing rehearsal schedules and the mechanics associated with choral concerts; supporting the preparation of programmes, publicity materials, and other literature; proposing and implementing development and outreach initiatives; and training singers, directing rehearsals, or providing instrumental support, as appropriate. This post requires about 3 hours work per week during term and is valued at £700.

Young Musicians Instrumental Assistantship (£700)

This assistant supports the departmental instrumental ensembles, instrumental programme and the Performance Supervisor. Duties include: managing the library and all associated materials; maintaining and collating registers for instrumental ensembles; managing instrument storage, inventory, and maintenance; managing rehearsal schedules and rehearsal and concert preparation as needed; assisting with administrative liaison with instrumental teachers; and proposing and implementing development and outreach initiatives. This post requires about 3 hours work per week during term and is valued at £700.

Wilfrid Mellers Gamelan Assistantship (£700)

The Mellers Assistantship originates from a covenant from the Department’s founder, Professor Wilfrid Mellers. This assistant supports Neil Sorrell in directing and administering  Gamelan Sekar Petak. Duties include: managing the library; transcribing sound recordings; managing membership, schedules and performances; helping to run school and other workshops; serving as external liaison officer, maintaining the website text and other publicity; and developing new resources and opportunities. MA students will be given preference. This post requires about 3 hours work per week during term and is valued at £700.

York Concerts Administration Assistantship (£4,400)

The duties of this Assistantship includes tasks in administration (room and instrument bookings, liaison with performers and publishers), event management (programme preparation, staff coordination, occasional evening concert duty), publicity (designing leaflets and posters, writing and designing e-newsletters, updating concert information online, supervising bi-annual mail-outs of brochures and direct mailings), and finance (prepare invoices and keep records). This post requires about 15 hours work per week during term, plus occasional hours during vacations, and is valued at £4,400.

Note: Applicants should have significant prior experience in arts administration and/or concert management. Well in advance of applying, applicants are strongly advised to contact Celia Frisby for further details about the responsibilities and to arrange an interview.  Because of the nature of the work it would be advisable for the Assistant to live within easy reach of campus.

This Assistantship is open to application from any postgraduate student, but could be of particular relevance/interest to a Community Musician with an interest in arts administration.

York Concerts Box Office Assistantship (£3,700)

Duties include selling tickets to members of the public, both in person and on the telephone, as well as dealing with online bookings, preparing reports with Databox ticket system, maintaining databases, banking cash from sales, and maintaining financial reports. This post requires about 12 hours work per week during term (including box office duty during afternoon opening hours and before evening concerts) with occasional hours during vacations, and is valued at £3,700

Note: Applicants should have significant prior experience of dealing with the general public and of cash handling.  Good computer skills are also essential although training on the box office system will be available. York Concerts General Assistantship (£2,160)

The holder of this post will deputise for the Box Office Assistant and act as Stage Manager for Concerts.  They may also be required to provide some general administrative support. The General Assistant will cover the Box Office for 2 afternoons a week selling tickets both in person and  over the telephone as well as dealing with online bookings.  There will be occasional evening box office duty, to be agreed with the Concerts Manager.  Stage management duties will include ensuring the Concert Hall is prepared in advance of rehearsals and performances, eg setting out chairs, music stands etc, greeting performers and settling them into their rehearsals.   This post requires an average of 9 hours of work per week (agreed flexibly) during term and is valued at £2,160.

Applicants should have prior experience of dealing with the general public and of cash handling.  Good computer skills are also essential, although training on the Box Office system will be available.  Prior experience of stage management would also be an advantage.  Applicants should live within easy reach of campus.

University of York Music Press (UYMP) Assistant (£2,000)

UYMP publish and promote new and established composers with a range of aesthetic backgrounds. The UYMP Assistant will assist with all processes involved in music publishing, such as

  • Putting the occasional finishing touch to scores saved on ‘Sibelius’ music programme
  • Helping with work on contracts between UYMP and composers and on individual musical work assignment
  • Helping with the ‘digitisation’ of the collection of master scores by working with both computer-processed scores and manuscripts
  • Printing from computer to copier, from Sibelius and ‘pdf’ files
  • Registering music works for ‘copyright’
  • Helping to update the catalogue and website
  • Liaising with composers, music ensembles, orchestras and customers
  • Responding to general enquiries. 
  • Creating/writing the occasional news item for the UYMP website 
  • Helping to consolidate information, using Excel files, for composers' end of year accounts
  • Creating and sending to customers watermarked electronic scores for use as 'perusal' copies

The Assistantship will involve an average of 8 hours per week during term time.
