By Train

York is on the main East Coast Line from London King's Cross to Edinburgh. Fast trains leave from both north and south at frequent intervals. There is also a direct service across the Pennines between York, Leeds and Manchester Airport. The University is two miles from the railway station and you will need to get a bus or taxi onto campus, see below for details.

An online rail timetable is available to help you to plan your journey.

By Bus

The University and Pullman buses operate a Unibus number 44 service between the University (including Heslington East and West campuses) and York railway station. In term time these operate every 10 minutes, and approximately every 15 minutes out of term time. The 44 bus runs along Lakeside Way (shown on the bottom of the map above), and there is a stop between Theatre, Film and Television and Computer Science buildings. You can find timetables on the Pullman website.

There is a dedicated free shuttle bus, ub.1, approximately every 10min between Heslington West and Heslington East campus. By bus or bike the journey takes about 20 minutes from the city centre of York.

By Air

The nearest international airports are Leeds-Bradford airport and Manchester airport. There is a direct rail link between York and Manchester airport. See By Bus or By Taxi to get to the Heslington East campus.

By Taxi

Taxis are always waiting outside the station - the journey takes about 15 minutes and costs in the region of £4 – £5. Some local taxi firms are:

Ace Taxis +44 1904 638888
Bee-Line Taxis +44 1904 797777
Ebor Taxis +44 1904 641441
Fleetways Taxis +44 1904 645333

By Car

The University of York is easily accessible by car from the A64 section of the outer ring road, via the A1079 or the A19. The city is at the junction of the A19, A59, A64 and A1079 trunk roads. The University is well signposted from the Outer Ring Road, which comprises the A64 and A1237. Our new building is located on the new Heslington East campus.

Car drivers are advised to avoid the city centre, as most of the roads within the city walls are pedestrianised during daylight hours every day (normally 10am-4.30pm).

SatNavs

As the Heslington East campus has only recently been completed the building addresses may not show up on SatNavs. If you use the postcode YO19 5LA you will be directed to the Grimston Bar park and ride. The campus is accesible via a route past the park and ride site.

Parking

Limited parking is available on the Heslington East campus in the Field Lane pay and display car park. We advise visitors to park in the pay and display car parks on Heslington West and use the free shuttle service, ub1, between the two sites. Details of available car parks can be found on the interactive campus map

The Field Lane car park is controlled by barriers and is run on a ticketing system to gain entry and exit from car park.  Short stay parking of up to 45 minutes is free.

Pleast note: the pay & display machines do not accept notes or credit/debit cards.

Disabled

Disabled parking bays are available on Freboys Lane and Deramore Lane.  There are limited parking bays, within the cluster, for users displaying either a blue disabled badge or University of York disabled permit. Spaces are not bookable.
