Postgraduate fees and funding

PhD funding opportunities

Candidates working on research topics supervised within our department are eligible to apply for three types of awards:

ESRC Studentships

Within the context of the White Rose Doctoral Training Center the department is able to offer two ESRC studentships, which comprise a fee waiver and a maintenance grant. These awards can be held on a 1+3 years (Masters+PhD) or +3 years (PhD) basis.

AHRC Studentships

One AHRC studentship is available, which also comprises a fee waiver and a maintenance grant, for 3 years.

Wolfson Foundation Scholarships

Applicants working on language-related topics may be eligible for a Wolfson Foundation Scholarship which consists of an award of £25000 per year for 3 years.

MA/MSc funding opportunities

Annual Fund Scholarship

Students who have been offered confirmed places on MA, MA by Research or MSc programmes may be eligible for the University's Annual Fund Scholarship.

Philogical Society Masters bursary

The Philological Society is offering a limited number of bursaries, each valued at £4000, which may be used for either fees or maintenance, for students embarking on a  postgraduate Masters programme in the areas of linguistics or philology.

The intention is that the bursaries will make a contribution to maintaining and furthering the breadth and diversity of language-study in the UK by providing support for outstanding young scholars in the field.

Closing date: 30 April 2012.

Funding for overseas students

The University also offers several scholarships for students who pay fees at the overseas rate.

Scholarship for Overseas Students (SOS)

The SOS is worth one-third or one-sixth of the overseas tuition fee for each year of successful study.

Overseas Research Scholarship (ORS)

The ORS will pay the full overseas tuition fee and a stipend of £5,000 per year for each year of successful study.

Overseas Continuation Scholarship (OCS)

For current University of York Masters students who are progressing to PhD studies at the University of York in the academic year 2012/13.The OCS is worth £5,000 in the first year of study.

The closing date for these scholarships is 30 April 2012.

Other overseas scholarshsips

The University also maintains a list of other overseas scholarships (e.g. Fulbright, Commonwealth etc.) with more specific eligibility criteria.

Other funding opportunities

Burgess Foundation PhD bursary

Applications are invited for a PhD bursary, to support research into the literature or music of Anthony Burgess. The bursary will support a scholar beginning his or her studies in the academic year 2012-13.

Areas of research might include Anthony Burgess and his contemporaries, or a critical investigation into one of the areas in which Burgess published (e.g. dystopia, historical fiction, Shakespeare, Marlowe, Joyce, literary journalism, literary biography, or translation).

Applicants should submit a detailed proposal and two academic references (in English). To be eligible, applicants should already have been offered a place on an accredited university PhD programme.

Special funding
