As a nursing student in the Department of Health Sciences you will experience the benefits of a large multidisciplinary department offering a broad range of taught and research programmes, combined with an extensive practice experience in the health and social care field.
Whichever route you take to enter a programme of nursing at the University of York you will choose one of four specialist fields of practice to shape your future career.
The four fields of practice you can consider are:
It may be that you start the programme with a very clear idea about the field of practice you wish to work in upon completion. Alternatively you may be unclear at first but start to develop a specific interest as you experience the different fields of practice during Year 1.
There will be regular opportunity for you to discuss the fields of practice prior to the point when you will be asked to indicate your preferred field for the remainder of the programme. We are contracted to deliver specific numbers for each field of practice and whilst there is some flexibility in this, the numbers for the smaller fields of practice - child and learning disability - are limited. We do all we can to accommodate your preference but places in the smaller field groups cannot be guaranteed. Please do contact us if you require any further details about this.
Outstanding!
The Department of Health Science's Mental Health & Learning Disability Nursing teams received the outcome of Outstanding for practice experience in the 2010 Nursing and Midwifery Council's (NMC) annual monitoring.
