Welcome to the Department of Sociology at the University of York.

We are a small, collegiate and dynamic group of lecturing, research and administrative staff.

We were ranked joint first for our research work in the RAE 2008 based upon this submission.

Although a research intensive Department we also take our teaching very seriously indeed. In the 2009 National Student Survey (NSS) the quality of our teaching was ranked 4th overall in the UK and 90% of our students said that they were satisfied with our courses.

We offer places to about 130 new undergraduate students each year on our exciting portfolio of BA (Hons) degrees all with A- Level offer grades of BBB and above. We also have an entry of about 30 new postgraduate students to our innovative MA/MSc and MPhil/PhD programmes each year.

We offer teaching and research in most areas of contemporary sociology. However, we have particular strengths in: Conversation Analysis; Crime; Culture; Gender and Sexualities; Medical Sociology; New Media; Research Methodology; Science and Technology Studies; Social Psychology; Social Theory; and Urban Studies.

On these web pages you can find out detailed information about the Department, about its degrees, about admissions policy and procedures, and about its staff and their research interests.

We are an open and friendly Department keen to attract students from the UK and overseas as well as to work with colleagues nationally and internationally on collaborative research.

8th International Aikido Tournament, Kyoto, Japan - Danielle Jones

Daniielle Jones with her silver medalParticipants of Aikido from all over the world gathered at the historic Kyubutokuden dojo, Kyoto, for the 8th International Aikido Tournament on 20th September 2009.

Danielle Jones has practiced Aikido for twenty years and has been a member of the British National Team for nine years, having won many awards including becoming the youngest ever British National Champion, then subsequently retaining the title over six years, European Champion and Women’s World Champion of Champions. Danielle travelled as part of the GB National Squad to compete in the International tournament in Japan and gained a silver medal in the Women’s Team Randori (fighting) event. Danielle, who is also the co-manager of the GB National Team, led the team to its greatest success in Japan - winning one gold, one silver and three bronze medals altogether.

SATSU Celebration: Invited Lecture Series 2009

SATSU have joined forces with the Social Informatics Research Unit (also based in the Department) because of our growing shared interests and research projects, making for a much larger critical mass of researchers here at York working on new technologies, science and culture.

To celebrate these developments and the fact that the Unit is 21 years old this year we are inviting two internationally-recognised experts each term to give a paper relating to their work and provide the basis for subsequent discussion. Each session would be followed by a drinks reception.

This autumn term we are delighted to announce that Professor Stephen Graham from the University of Durham, and Dr Celia Roberts from Lancaster University will be our two guest speakers

Current Calls for Papers

Current calls for research and conference papers are now available in the Research Section of the departmental web site.
