The new millennium has signalled a dynamic period of growth for the University of York. Since 2000, we have invested in 20 new buildings on the existing campus and completed the first phase of a £500m campus expansion at Heslington East.

The second issue focuses on the results of the 2008 UK Research Assessment Exercise which placed York firmly in the UK top ten for research.
Features include: the Department of English and Related Literature, named best for research in the UK; the work of the York Structural Biology Laboratory where researchers first identified the structure of the oestrogen receptor, a breakthrough that led to treatments for breast cancer. York’s public policy research is known the world over and experts in the Departments of Health Sciences and Social Policy and Social Work and the Centres for Reviews and Dissemination and Health Economics examine many contentious social questions. Breaking down the barriers between the disciplines helps to solve intractable problems, and the lessons learned from biology are being used by scientists in Electronics and Computer Science to develop self-healing electronic technology, while sociologists and linguists are working together to identify what makes successful communication using their conversation analysis

The University’s world-class research is showcased in a new publication launched in September 2008.
The first issue includes articles on our work on developing artemisinin to cure malaria, a better understanding of how Alzheimer’s develops, computer programs which will revolutionise face recognition, and understanding the complex systems which lie behind everything from economic behaviour, the geometry of viruses and climate conditions.
We also profile one of our first human rights defenders, a highly unusual type of research fellow, based in the Centre for Applied Human Rights.
