Our Department

The Department of Chemistry is a large and successful department in an attractive University with an excellent reputation for teaching and research.

The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), announced on 18 December 2008, which measures the research quality of university departments, firmly placed both the University of York and its Chemistry department in the top ten of all UK universities.

According to the Times Higher Educational Supplement assessment of the RAE data, York is ranked equal eighth of all UK departments.

By one of the RAE's principal measures (overall percentage of research work which is internationally excellent or better) York chemistry is nationally ranked as third.

This is an outstanding result and confirms York's position as one of the leading chemistry departments in the UK. Our Department has:

  • 50 full-time members of staff including many winners of international prizes
  • over 460 undergraduate students
  • approximately 150 graduates (mainly studying for the PhD degree)
  • 80 research fellows

We have a group of coherent laboratories, recently extended and modernised to provide an excellent environment for teaching and research.
