Termtime English Language Classes & Tuition

The Open Access Programme

All international and EU students enrolled on undergraduate or postgraduate programmes are eligible for University-funded English language tuition. This Open Access tuition is available during the three University terms on a part- time basis.

You can join courses and workshops, or have one-to-one consultations. There are two kinds of courses:

  • 16-hour courses in academic or general English skills, consisting of eight two- hour classes over one term (one class per week)
  • 32-hour Cambridge English courses, consisting of 16 two-hour classes over one term (two classes per week).

There are also Dissertation Writing workshops, each comprising two hours of training.

Alternatively, you can book one-to-one consultations with a CELT tutor to discuss an assignment or your dissertation.

The amount of free tuition is managed by a system of English Language Points

Term 2 Weeks 3 - 10 (23 January - 16 March)

Your department may have arranged for CELT to deliver specialist courses and workshops for you. Provisional arrangements have been made to run courses for the following departments:

Undergraduate Postgraduate
Biology Economics Education Studies
Economics Electronics Law
Management Studies Management Studies Politics
Psychology Psychology Social Policy
  Sociology Women’s Studies

Check with your department office for details.

It is easy to underestimate the workload that you will have in your department, so we recommend that students take only one CELT course per term. If you wish to take more than one course per term, you should discuss this with the Senior Tutor responsible for the programme.

There is no formal assessment on Open Access courses, but your tutor will give you occasional tasks to do, in order to assess your progress. On some courses, you will be given a final written report on your performance in these tasks.

To get the benefit of our courses, you need to attend as many classes as possible. If you know that you will be absent and have a legitimate reason, you must inform the tutor in advance of the class. It is at their discretion to decide whether to agree such an absence.
