About the Centre

Location

We are in the centre of the University of York campus (marked as V9) in Vanbrugh College.

The Centre for English Language Teaching specialises in providing intermediate and advanced level English courses and academic preparation programmes.

As part of the Department of Education, we are able to offer quality, research-informed courses for students from undergraduate to doctoral levels.

What we offer

We offer courses, workshops and consultations in the following areas:

• English for academic and research purposes
• General English and examination preparation
• Specialist Contract Programmes in English language and British culture
• English language teacher education

Our mission

The Centre provides an intellectual, social and physical environment in which students and other clients can develop their skills in using English for academic and/or professional purposes.

Our qualified and experienced teaching staff offer specialist expertise in English for Academic and Research Purposes and English for Specific Purposes, as well as in the development of general English-language proficiency.

We are affiliated with the Department of Education and, as such, have the technical and knowledge resources necessary to offer quality, research-informed teaching which responds effectively to our external clients' needs and which complements students' University work from undergraduate to doctoral levels.

Our aims

CELT’s aims are in line with the University’s four key vision themes: Excellence, Sustainability, Inclusivity, Internationalisation.

Excellence: CELT will continue to provide excellent programmes and courses for students and clients and to strive for professional excellence for all staff members.

Sustainability: CELT will maintain a positive financial position, pursuing activities which are financially sustainable as well as educationally sound.

Inclusivity: while focusing its activities on HE students and pro-student populations, CELT is nevertheless committed to serving a wide range of communities.

Internationalisation: most of CELT’s clients are international and all CELT staff members have international experience. CELT is poised to take a pivotal role in the continued internationalisation of the University.
