Aims

  • to explore the concept of vernacular buildings, both in the UK and in other cultural traditions
  • to discuss the place of vernacular buildings in the more general history of architecture
  • to gain familiarity with the principal materials from which vernacular buildings are constructed and their role in creating regional distinctiveness
  • to gain a familiarity with the craft skills involved in the construction of vernacular buildings
  • to demonstrate the modes of failure of materials used in vernacular buildings, and the appropriate methods of repair
  • to consider the role of vernacular buildings as part of a sustainable heritage

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this module you should:

  • understand the concept of vernacular building and its place in the broader context of built heritage in the UK and in other cultural contexts
  • demonstrate a knowledge of the principal materials that can be encountered in vernacular buildings, a knowledge of the craft skills involved in using those materials and the modes of failure of those materials
  • have an ability to design appropriate repair strategies for vernacular buildings
  • show a knowledge and understanding of the place of vernacular buildings in the current sustainability debate
