Equality Impact Assessment (EQIA)

This web page explores Equality Impact Assessment, the benefits and processes.

What is EQIA?

It is a process to check that we are treating everyone fairly and to ensure that the University is promoting equality for all.

"Impact assessment is not only a legal requirement, but a powerful instrument of positive change" (Equality Challenge Unit)

Why do we need EQIA?

Some groups are more likely to be disadvantaged, for example people with disabilities or those who are from black and minority ethnic backgrounds. Through EQIA we can look at the way things are done - from policy to decisions and practice, talk to those affected and bring about necessary change.

What are the benefits of EQIA?

  • It helps to ensure that the University meets its legal obligations
  • It promotes an inclusive community and culture
  • It enables us to improve standards
  • It will enhance the reputation of the University
  • It helps to contribute to social justice

What do we impact assess?

  • All University policies, procedures, practices (formal and informal)
  • The impact of major financial decisions
  • The impact of changes to a service or a provision

Who will carry out Equality Impact Assessment?

The process of EQIA is being mainstreamed across the University, so many people involved in policy and decision making will be trained in EQIA including:

  • Policy writers
  • Managers
  • Committee chairs and secretaries

When should EQIA be carried out?

  • At least every 3 years on all existing policies and procedures
  • As an integral part of the development of new policy
  • As part of the decision making where there are major financial decisions or a change to a service or provision
