Trans student action plan
If you wish to discuss the range of support options available to you as a trans student, such as how to change your name on university systems, change your university card, take time off for medical or other reasons, or access university support, you are encouraged to approach an Adviser in the Student Hub to complete a Trans Student Action Plan.
Action plans are straightforward and provide the opportunity for you and an Adviser to have a discussion and make notes of any issues that might need sorting out, who will do what, and when.
Action plans are not a 'form' that have to be completed. We recognise that every student is different, and students may not have made any firm decisions about how they identify, whether to transition, who they want to tell, or what steps they might want to take next. The action plan acts as a guide to aid conversation, consider a range of common issues that may arise, and navigate university life. It may also need to be revised as circumstances change. As such, only those sections that students want to complete should be completed.
It is expected that students who want an action plan would normally complete this with a Student Hub Advisor as Advisors (rather than department or college staff) are likely to have greater knowledge of how to navigate various university systems. However, students may prefer to complete the action plan with another member of staff in their department or college. Whoever takes the lead on completing the action plan, it is likely they will need input from other members of staff too.
Topics that an action plan might include are:
- Whether you want a named contact in the university who you can approach if you have any difficulties or concerns.
- Whether you want to change your name on university systems, your university card, or your email address.
- Whether you would like help to inform anyone in your department or college about your transition, name change or other circumstances.
- Whether you might need time off at any point for medical appointments or counselling, or whether you might need a break from your studies, and who you need to inform in such circumstances.
- Whether you might require a Student Support Plan through Disability Services, for example if you have any disabilities or long term conditions that might require adjustments for exams and assessments.
- Whether you need any help with accommodation, student finance, or travel and visa restrictions.
- Whether you have any needs or concerns regarding placements or study abroad programmes.
- What options are available for your name on your degree certificate, and what name you would like to be called out at graduation.
- Any other concerns, questions, or requests you might have.
