The Great York Walk around the world to transform mental health

Posted on 5 August 2021

The University of York launched The Great York Walk in 2019 to support the Mentally Fit York fund in order to raise money to promote good mental health among the city's communities and beyond.

In 2021, as a result of the ongoing impact of the coronavirus pandemic, The Great York Walk went global as we invited students, staff, alumni and friends from across the world to sign up and take part in our virtual 12-week step challenge (10th May - 31st July).

It's been an incredible 12 weeks for The Great York Walk, and we've loved seeing a community of walkers come together from all around the world to raise awareness and funds for Mentally Fit York.

With an international community of 568 walkers, made up of York students, staff, alumni and friends, our walkers covered a staggering total of 133,009.6 miles / 214,058.3 km, that's over 5 times further than our original 25,000 mile target.

Together, they have raised an astonishing £35,000 for Mentally Fit York

100% of everything they have raised will go directly to Mentally Fit York, where funds will be spent on initiatives and research to improve mental health across York and beyond. Thanks to our incredible Great York Walkers, funding is now in place to support a range of mental health initiatives, which are more important than ever in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Thank you so much to all of our walkers and to everyone who has supported them over the past few months. The Great York Walk will be back in 2022, if you’d like to take part please contact yustart@york.ac.uk and we’ll make sure that you’re one of the first to hear all about our new and exciting plans for next year’s challenge.
