Things to do before you start
Read your Joining Instructions
After we have confirmed your place, look out for an email entitled 'University of York – Joining Instructions'. This has the information you need to enrol as a current student, and any other tasks you need to complete.
It is very important you open the email as soon as you can and follow the instructions in it.
Set up your IT account
Your Joining Instructions email will tell you how to set up your IT account. You need to do this before you can enrol.
When you have created your account you will have a full student username and password and a University email address. Start checking your University email address, this is where we will send all our future emails to you. You will be able to use all of our student systems too. Remember to keep your password safe and do not share it with anyone.
- Visit the York Identity Manager to set up your IT account. You will then be able to complete pre-arrival tasks, access IT facilities and systems, and use our virtual learning environment (VLE).
Find out how to pay your fees
For information on how to pay your fees and other frequently asked questions, visit the student finance pages.
Check your University email account
After you have enrolled we will only send emails to your University email address, so you need to check it regularly.
Login at https://mail.google.com with your University username and password.
If you have any IT problems, get in touch with the IT Support.
Apply for a University card
The University Card is used for library lending and for activating printers on campus. It is also used as proof of identity for students physically attending exams on or off campus.
As a distance learning student you may not necessarily need a University Card, if you do and would like to apply you will need to upload a head and shoulders photo of yourself so make sure you have one ready.
- Apply online for your University card (via e:Vision)
Visit the student homepage
This is the homepage for all students at the University. It's a quick way to get to your applications and a handy way of keeping in touch with useful information, news, events and reminders.
