Additional requirements guidance

If students have a diagnosed medical condition or disability that would have an impact on their accommodation requirements, the University must be made aware so that we can plan effectively and provide accommodation that meets the students’ requirements where possible.

This can be done by fully completing our Supporting Evidence Form or emailing us official documentation in relation to your diagnosis. You will need to have the support of a doctor or medical professional to complete the form before uploading and submitting it with your application for accommodation.

If a form or official documentation is submitted to us after the deadline, this may delay any necessary adjustments to be made.

If you have any queries before you apply for accommodation or submit the form, please contact us using the email address: accommodation@york.ac.uk

The Accommodation Services Team will review the additional requirements form or official documentation, and if necessary, arrange a visit with you to the accommodation to support any decision making.

Changes that we can make to support you living in university accommodation:

  • an accessible room and bathroom suitable for a physical disability
  • a ground floor room, or room close to a lift to assist with access and mobility
  • a vibrating pillow for students with hearing impairment to alert the need to evacuate in case of fire evacuation
  • a mini-refrigerator in your room for storage of medical prescriptions
  • permission to bring an assistance dog in line with the university policy

Requests for changes to be made for reasons which are not considered additional requirements can not be provided.

These requests include:

  • ensuite accommodation for religious or cultural reasons
  • designated quiet accommodation
  • alcohol-free accommodation
  • mini-fridges for non-medical purposes
  • dietary choices which are not medically required

We have a dedicated Additional requirements web page which is regularly updated and we would advise you to check this periodically for up-to-date information.
