Leverhulme Centre for Algorithmic Life PhD scholarship

The Leverhulme Centre for Algorithmic Life’s data cluster, led by Prof. David Beer, is offering a PhD scholarship in the Department of Sociology. The successful applicant will be working on a project that explores any aspect of algorithmic life, preferably in relation to data.

The Leverhulme Centre for Algorithmic Life is a major new interdisciplinary research hub dedicated to the study of how machine learning and AI algorithms are transforming societies. The Centre is supported by £10m in funding from the Leverhulme Trust, for ten years, awarded through its 2025 Research Centre competition. Led by Prof. Louise Amoore at the Centre’s hub at Durham University, the Leverhulme Centre has collaborative partners in York, Edinburgh, Amsterdam, and Duke Universities.

The Leverhulme Centre for Algorithmic Life’s data cluster, led by Prof. David Beer, is based at the University of York. As part of the cluster’s activities we are now advertising a PhD scholarship to be based in the Department of Sociology at the University of York. The successful applicant will be working on a project that explores any aspect of algorithmic life, preferably in relation to data.

The PhD scholarship is full-time and will include a full stipend at UKRI level and tuition fees at the UK fee rate.

Eligibility

Open to International (including EU), International (non-EU) and UK (home) students.

Open to students applying for a full time PhD in Sociology only.

Applicants will need to have applied for the PhD programme by the 19 March indicating on their application that they wish to be considered for the Leverhulme Centre for Algorithmic Life PhD scholarship.
