Screening of Hidden Figures with introduction and Q&A

Sunday 19 February 2017, 2.30PM to 16:30

Speaker(s): Film

Science, gender, race, and the race for space! Come and celebrate the women of science on screen at a special showing of Hidden Figures presented in association with theBritish Society for the History of Science

Why should the film industry improve the visibility of women of science? What does promoting and normalising diversity matter in 2010s? Hidden Figures offers an exciting and sadly infrequent big screen image of women in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, medicine, mathematics). The movie is a biopic of three African-American women scientists who worked at NASA in its formative years – they are hidden figures of the institution and the history of science.

The 2.30 screening on Sunday 19th February will be introduced by University of York's Dr Sam Robinson (Sociology). He will be joined in a post-screening discussion by Dr Sabine Clarke (History, University of York) and Dr Amy C. Chambers (Film, Newcastle University).

All welcome!
