Prof David Sosa: What we make when we make an effort

Christian Piller on Sosa "A brilliant philosopher who has published in mind and in language, in metaphysics and in ethics. I especially enjoy talking frankly with him about the quality of other people's papers although this joy will go to others on this occasion. One notable shortcoming: He has put Gettier in first place in his collection on Analytic Philosophy."   

 

Abstract: "Buridan’s Ass is easily misunderstood: far from pointing to a difference in the applicability of a principle of sufficient reason in the epistemic and practical domains, the case rather highlights important analogies between practical judgment and the formation of belief. While choosing and deciding (perhaps like guessing) can proceed arbitrarily, judgment, of any kind, requires sufficient reason. An improved understanding of the practical will fits well into a structure of further distinctions which, together, permit an attractive characterization of trying and effort.”
