The project, led by Dr Michael Stuart from the Department of Philosophy, will bring together researchers from multiple disciplines to study what some academics describe as a major shift in scientific practice.

The project, called Scientific Progress and Artificial Intelligence: a Capabilities-Based Ethnographic Epistemology, is supported by the prestigious ERC Consolidator grant and will examine the use of AI across four scientific fields, combining interviews, observations and data analysis to understand how researchers are deploying the technology in day-to-day work.

The project aims to offer both the first comprehensive account of scientific ability and the first detailed picture of how AI is currently used in research laboratories.
