Perception’s Authority
Sensory perception has been held to be a distinctively authoritative source of belief. On one way of developing that idea, due to earlier work by John McDowell, the idea seems to depend on accepting that sensory perceptions have the same sorts of contents as beliefs. I’ll consider what scope there is for preserving the idea of perception’s distinctive authority while rejecting that view about sensory perception.
