In Remembrance of Tom McLeish

Posted on 1 March 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our distinguished colleague and generous friend Tom McLeish (Professor of Natural Philosophy in the Department of Physics and the Centre for Medieval Studies at York). Tom passed away on Monday 27 February.

Portrait of Tom

In the time that Tom was at York, his energy, both creative and supportive in equal measure, shaped the CMS community as he encouraged us to expand the horizons of Medieval Studies. Our predecessor, Sarah Rees Jones writes: ‘We all know that Tom was a very special person - not just a great intellect and a man of faith, but a person who made everyone feel special, capable and loved in just the right way.’

There will be a service of thanksgiving and celebration for Tom’s life. We will share this information with the CMS community, but you can still subscribe to the mailing list (maintained by Durham University) to receive updates on his memorial arrangements.

As we share this news with you, we are thinking of his family and many friends around the world. He will be sorely missed.
