The new Faculty Librarian Team will still support students and staff but in a new faculty-focused way - here's all you need to know about how we can help you during your time at York.

From the start of semester 2 the Academic Liaison team is now the Faculty Librarian team. You might have seen your department’s Academic Liaison Librarian providing an induction about the Library, speaking in one of your lectures about study skills or supporting you in a one-to-one appointment. All of that and more will now be provided by your Faculty Librarians. Each of the University’s three faculties have two or three Faculty Librarians assigned to work with them, who will be your main points of contact within the Library. We’ve made this change so that we can more easily work across departments within each faculty, which will help us to improve the support we offer in a number of ways.

Can I still get help using the library?

Absolutely! Although we have a new team name and a slightly different focus, we also remain committed to helping students to get the most out of the University Library. We will continue to run inductions and teaching sessions in departments, and you’ll still be able to book an appointment with your Faculty Librarians to discuss your particular research needs. You might find that you’ll now have a different librarian working with your department, as we’ve needed to do some moving around within the team to make sure we can provide a quality student experience across all three faculties.

Support for students

Your Faculty Librarian can help you to identify specific resources for your subject and talk to you about tools and techniques for working effectively to make the most of what the Library offers. They offer support through teaching sessions, one-to-one appointments over Zoom or in-person, answering questions via email and providing information on the guides below.

The referencing guidance contains advice and examples to help you use your department's referencing style correctly.

Support for staff

The Faculty Librarian team consists of information professionals who are qualified to provide information literacy training and collection advice. They are ex officio members of departmental Boards of Studies and are happy to attend other relevant meetings such as Teaching Committee.

If you are a module leader, contact us to discuss how we can provide embedded teaching relevant to your course and student assessments. We are also here if you wish to discuss collection needs, especially if you are planning a new module or programme.
