Department staff use traditional Japanese picture cards to teach languages and foster inclusive community engagement across York.

The Kamishibai Team from the Department of Language and Linguistic Science continues to expand its innovative approach to language learning. Formed in 2020, the team includes Géraldine Enjelvin, Yumi Nixon and Ulrike Wray. They use a centuries-old Japanese form of storytelling featuring colourful picture cards inserted into a wooden theatre.

This user-friendly tool offers an integrated approach to literacy, oracy, drama and visual art. Over the years, the team has incorporated Kamishibai into Languages for All modules to stimulate group interaction and help students practice speaking French, German or Japanese in front of an audience.

Student volunteers have also delivered intergenerational projects in local primary schools and care homes, with several receiving a University of York student volunteering award. In partnership with York Cares, the team has provided sessions for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities pupils and at The Place.

Looking ahead, the team will deliver interactive workshops for Year 3 pupils at the Robert Wilkinson Primary Academy on 3 June 2026. Participants will explore French, German, Japanese and Makaton sign language. Additionally, they will host a treasure-hunting and origami-making event at the York Festival of Ideas on 7 June 2026 for children aged five to eleven.
