York staff co-chair major international language evolution conference

Two University of York academics are leading the organisation of the EVOLANG XVI conference in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

The Department of Language and Linguistic Science is pleased to announce that Professor Giuseppe Longobardi is serving as a Co-Chair for EVOLANG XVI: International Conference on the Evolution of Language. Professor Longobardi is co-chairing the event alongside Dr Dimitar Kazakov from the Department of Computer Science, highlighting a collaborative, cross-disciplinary approach.

EVOLANG is the major meeting for researchers studying the origins and evolution of language. The conference series, which will hold its 2026 meeting in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, from 7–10 April 2026, welcomes submissions from a broad range of relevant disciplines. These include, but are not limited to, linguistics, cognitive science, genetics, anthropology, and computational modelling.

The conference showcases high-quality research and includes both oral and poster presentations.

The deadline for paper submissions is Sunday, 26 October 2025 (AoE).
