A new partnership between universities and professional associations aims to strengthen ties between translation and interpreting education and practice.

On 25 October 2025, the Department of Language and Linguistic Science welcomed colleagues from the Association of Interpreters and Translators (AIT). The event, hosted by translation and interpreting students and Eloísa Monteoliva-García, President of the Association of Programmes in Translation and Interpreting Studies (APTIS) in the UK and Ireland, marked the launch of a new APTIS affiliate membership.

This new membership aims to foster closer collaboration between academia and professional associations in the fields of translation and interpreting.

The hybrid event began with a networking lunch and a tour of the department's interpreting suite in the Spring Lane Building for practitioners and students attending in person. Later, students from other APTIS member universities and additional AIT members joined remotely from 15:00–17:00. Attendees heard from Eloísa Monteoliva (APTIS and University of York) and Irina Sanders and Ginta Rudd (AIT) about the mission and activities of each association.

The launch provided a valuable opportunity for students to connect with professional translators and interpreters, exchange ideas, and engage in meaningful conversations about the future of the profession. The event also coincided with the AIT's sixth anniversary.
