On Friday, 29 May 2026, the Department of Language and Linguistic Science will host a talk on Dante’s Divina Commedia presented by Prof. Gianfranco Serioli, Dante scholar, organiser and key speaker at the Festival Dantesto Bresciano (Brescia, Italy).

La preghiera di San Bernardo alla Vergine. Tra le tante preghiere dedicate alla Vergine incastonate nella letteratura, spiccano quelle di Petrarca e di Dante. Quest’ultimo, però, nella sua raggiunge una sintesi sublime di supplica e lode, che ne fanno il suo omaggio a colei che definisce il “bel fior ch'io sempre invoco e mane e sera”. Gianfranco Serioli ci porterà a perderci nella bellezza della più stupita e poetica tra le preghiere alla Vergine Maria: quella di San Bernardo, che chiude il più grande poema mai scritto, la Divina Commedia.

The event is part of ‘Serate italiane’ run by Cinzia Bacilieri (Dept. Language and Linguistic Science), a series of talks on Italian culture, language and society at the University of York, UK. 

General admission: Free

The talk and the following Q&A session will be entirely in Italian. The event is aimed at those who are currently studying Italian (BA in Italian, YLE/ LfA Elementary to advanced levels), or people who want to practise their Italian language skills.
