Event details

On Thursday 5th February 2026 the Department of Language and Linguistic Science will host its annual Alumni Event ‘What can you do with a degree in Language and Linguistics?’.

Many different career paths are open to language and linguistics graduates…and to prove it, the department of LLS is inviting some alumni back to York! The speakers will share their experience of what they've been up to since graduation and how their degree has helped them shape their current career paths.

This year’s guest speakers are:

Leah Scott, who graduated from the University of York in 2021 with a degree in Spanish and Italian, and is now a Modern Foreign Languages teacher at Dixons McMillan Academy in Bradford.

Emma Thorne, who graduated from the University of York in 2024 with a degree in English Language and Linguistics (with a placement year), and is now a Marketing Executive at Grosvenor Systems and a Communications Assistant at Simple Politics.

Vanessa Villanueva, who graduated from the University of York in 2014 with a degree in Linguistics with French, and is now working as a Senior Policy Advisor within the UK civil service.

Come along to the event to hear what the speakers have to say about their career journeys, what their jobs are like day-to-day, and how their degree has helped them in the workplace. We encourage students to register their interest in attending the event using this form: http://tiny.cc/LLSalumni

The event is open to all students and alumni of the Department, from any year or degree.
